The Chalk River reactor in Ontario, Canada, was shut down Sunday to repair the mechanism used to extract isotope-containing rods, according to a spokesman of the Atomic Energy of Canada, the reactor's operator. MDS Nordion, which gets molybdenum-99 from the reactor, is anticipating a 50% shortage of medical isotopes this week because of the unscheduled shutdown. The reactor is expected to resume production today.
